St. Paul on the Lake Catholic School
Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan
The St. Paul Educational Trust recently awarded scholarships to four students from St. Paul on the Lake Parish for outstanding academic performance. Students were invited to apply for the scholarships during an open application process that took place from January through March.
The 2022-2023 winners include:
Monsignor Francis X. Canfield Scholarship - Awarded to a graduating 8th grade member of St. Paul Parish who plans to attend a Catholic high school; winner is Ethan Murphy who is attending University of Detroit Jesuit High School in the fall. Ethan is the son of Rachel and Andrew Murphy of Grosse Pointe Farms.
Couzens Family Scholarship - Awarded to a graduating 8th grade member of St. Paul Parish who plans to attend a Catholic high school; this year’s winner is Charles Weikel who is attending University of Detroit Jesuit High School in the fall. Charlie is the son of Maureen and Jason Hanawalt of Grosse Pointe Farms, and the late Robert Weikel.
Joseph and Alice Wright Scholarship - This grant is given annually to a deserving young parishioner entering the sixth grade; recipient is William Shore, son of Michelle and Tom Shore of Grosse Pointe Farms.
William A. Cardinal Scholarship - This is a full tuition scholarship to St. Paul School awarded to an in-coming 8th grade student exhibiting outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and character; this year’s winner is Catie Kuchta, daughter of Sharon and Gerry Kuchta of Grosse Pointe Park.
Winners are chosen by a committee made up of St. Paul School parents and parish members. St. Paul School scholarship winners are announced at the conclusion of the school year. Recipients of the Catholic High School scholarships are announced at 8th grade graduation
"We are pleased to be able to honor and support each of these students for their outstanding academic achievements and the contributions that they have made to the parish community of St. Paul on the Lake," said Kathleen Conway, Chair of the St. Paul Educational Trust. "We look forward to following their progress as they begin the next school year."
The Couzens, Canfield and Wright scholarships are eligible for renewal annually.
About the St. Paul Educational Trust
Formed in 1977, the St. Paul Educational Trust is a 501(c)(3) organization that serves the educational needs of students from St. Paul on the Lake parish. The trust aids in the support of present and future educational and instructional programs at St. Paul on the Lake parish; it subsidizes the cost of Catholic education for needy students who meet certain criteria; it provides merit-based scholarships for parish students and supports educational projects within the parish. Over the years more than $2 million has been disbursed to fund scholarships, tuition assistance and to make annual grants to St. Paul School.

Congratulations to 8th Grader Teresa Romanelli, who won a Gold Key in the Midwest Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Her short story now moves to the national level. Previous winners of the prestigious 99-year-old contest include Robert McCloskey, Stephen King, and Amanda Gorman.
